I was just in the bathroom, minding my own business, when I heard something. It was someone in one of the stalls sneezing.
A dilemma: do I say, "Bless you," or is that creepy?
I'm sure the guy didn't know I was there and it would certainly freak me out a bit to hear someone in a bathroom say bless you. However, he might have known I was there and was thinking, "what the hell? I sneeze and this guy doesn't care about my immortal soul?!"
Luckily for me the sneeze I heard was only the first in a salvo of sneezes this dude had lined up, and everyone knows you don't need to say 'Bless you' if the person sneezes more than 3 times in a minute.
The question remains, if one hears a solitary sneeze from a stranger in a public restroom is one expected to say "Bless you?"
And please, let us not get sidetracked by the question, "Do you even need to say bless you at all since that was based on the superstition that your soul might escape while you were sneezing?"
